“Modernismo” or Hispanic Modernism refers most accurately to an attitude or approach to life as much as to the art that came to dominate literature in Latin America and Spain at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. “Modernismo” appeared as one manifestation of a much larger artistic revolution in the Western world, which produced not only different “modernisms,” but also schools and styles associated with all the variations of Symbolism and the “Art Nouveau.”
